This is a printed replica of the cookbook described in the book Billy Goats, Rattlesnakes, and Jesus by Deborah Silva. The hand-made version was originally copyrighted in 1990, following the release of several smaller specialty cookbooklets. The book includes original recipes and how-to tutorials developed in the little one-room cabin at the Archer Mine in the Coast Range of California. It includes award-winning recipes and original artwork.
Written in the days before gluten was an issue (though most recipes work well substituting gluten-free flours for whole wheat), Mastering the Art ... covers everything from breakfast goodies, cakes, cookies, pies, and award-winning cheesecakes to canning, soups, salads, main dishes, and "A Hassle-Free Thanksgiving Dinner." All receipes are made using whole wheat flour, honey (in place of sugar) - oh, and lots of real butter.
Following the release of Deborah's cookbooklet titled simply Pumpkins, in 1983, the world-famous Harris Ranch Restaurant on Interstate 5 outside of Coalinga, CA, featured Deborah's "Pumpkin Cheesecake" on their holiday menu. Here's what Executive Chef, Kelly Mularney, had to say at the time:
"We made the Pumpkin Cheesecake to sample, and after tasting, decided to produce them to sell over the Thanksgiving Holiday. They were a big success. We sold all that we made for our country store. We also received several nice comments from our dining room clients."
Included in Mastering the Art ... are award winners from the Fresno County Fair - honey recipes among the usual sugar contenders:
You'll also find lots of kid-friendly nutritious recipes including Peanut Butter Muffins, Carrot Cookies, and Grandma D's famous Chocolate Chip Pancakes. There's even plenty of honey-sweetened ice creams, plus step-by-step instructions on how to bake bread.
What are people saying about Mastering the Art of Honey-n-Whole Wheat Cooking?
"Deborah’s cookbook has become the standard reference cookbook for our kitchen and is now full of pencil notations in the margins about our culinary successes (many) and failures (few)."
Mark VanBaalan, Boston, MA, 1991
"I still use your cookbook all the time with the honey and wheat recipes. They are wonderful. Your recipe for Enchiladas is still our family favorite."
Emily Infanti, Avondale, PA, 2020
